Russian Stove vs. Finnish Fireplace vs. German Kachelofen
‘Masonry heater’ is a family of related traditions that grew up across the cold parts of Europe. They share the same core idea — burn hot, store the heat in mass, radiate it slowly — but each has its own character.
The Russian stove (and its cousins) is a heavy, simple, hugely effective mass heater, often with a built-in bake oven and even a sleeping bench. The Finnish/Scandinavian contraflow fireplace is known for elegant, efficient channel designs. The German Kachelofen is the tile-clad tradition Udo trained in — the same engineering, finished as ceramic art.
In practice, a good builder borrows the best of all three and designs for your home rather than copying one regional template.
