Kachelöfen (Tile Stoves)

The German tile stove — a masonry heater wrapped in handmade ceramic tile. Heating as furniture and art.

The Kachelofen is the German tile stove: a masonry heater clad in handmade ceramic tiles. It is equal parts heating system, furniture, and sculpture — the warm centrepiece a room is built around.

Udo apprenticed in this tradition in Germany. There are only a handful of builders in Eastern Canada who can design and build a true Kachelofen, with the tilework and the heater engineering done by the same pair of hands.

Frequently asked

What makes a Kachelofen different from a regular masonry heater?

The ceramic tile facing. The heating core works the same way, but the Kachelofen is finished in handmade tiles — which also store and radiate heat beautifully.

Can the tiles be custom?

Yes — colour, glaze, and even hand-painted or mosaic tile can be part of the design. This is where Udo’s ceramic-art background comes in.
