What Is a Masonry Heater? A Guide for Canadian Homeowners
If you have only ever known an open fireplace or a steel wood stove, a masonry heater can sound almost too good to be true: you burn one hot fire, and the heat keeps coming for the rest of the day. Here is how it actually works.
A masonry heater has two parts that matter: a firebox where a hot, fast fire burns, and a large mass of stone and firebrick laced with internal channels. The hot gases from that fire wind through the channels and dump their heat into the mass before leaving the chimney. The mass then radiates that stored heat gently into your home for 12 to 24 hours.
Because the fire burns hot and complete, combustion is very clean and efficiency is over 90% — compared with roughly 10–15% for an open fireplace, where most of the heat goes straight up the chimney. You use far less wood, and you get steady radiant warmth instead of the roast-then-freeze cycle of ordinary fireplaces.
Masonry heaters suit Canadian homes especially well: cold, long heating seasons reward thermal mass, and wood is often local and affordable.
